Palestine focused on cultivating Oyster mushrooms as part of a boycott against the occupation. With high levels of poverty and unemployment due to the siege, coupled with a lack of animal protein in white and red meats, some turned to cultivating Oyster mushrooms to compensate for the deficiency. Oyster mushroom cultivation is seen as an important economic project aimed at alleviating the needs of needy families in Gaza.
