Baghdad was previously known as the City of Peace and was given various names in the past like the City of Mansur, Al-Ruwah, Al-Zurra, and Al-Mudawara. The name Baghdad is an ancient Aramaic name that appeared in Assyrian and Babylonian artifacts with original spellings like (Baghdadu, Bakdadu, Bakdudu). Muslims interpreted the name’s meaning in Persian as “gift of idols” or “devil”, prompting the Abbasid Caliph Abu Ja’far al-Mansur to rename the city to City of Peace (Dar al-Salam) during his reign. This name persisted in the later period of the Abbasid era.
